It allows you to create intricate details and subtle fading techniques that will enhance your artwork. The great thing about vinyl erasers is that they remove pen and ink marks and they can remove marks cleanly. This white Paper Mate eraser (pictured below) was immediately usable after just a few seconds of kneading. FaberCastell Kneaded Eraser is probably the most popular choice among artists, and a fantastic soft eraser.

A raw (brown course) block of rubber 2x2x12" is held against clogged paper and the grit is cleaned out. A popular vinyl eraser is the Mars plastic eraser, which is residue free, resistant to crumbling and works perfectly with charcoal. It is usually made of a grey or white unvulcanized rubber (though it can be found in many different colors, such as green, blue, hot pink, yellow, and so forth) resembling putty or chewing gum. The old region will be replaced with the inner white or clean parts, and your kneaded eraser will be cleaned.

Start off with just one strip of tape, but after you’re done all these steps, repeat this over and over with new pieces of tape until you have enough crumbs to make your kneaded eraser as big as you want (again, this will take some time). Although kneaded erasers do not wear away like other erasers, they can become saturated and unable to absorb any more graphite or charcoal. When this happens, it means that your kneaded eraser has served you well, but it’s now time to retire it and replace it since it’s become saturated with charcoal and/or graphite. If it starts to change shape or becomes too dirty, fold the eraser into itself, pinch it to a fine tip and continue! The silly putty constituent at times gives dirty marks on your paper because of high graphite shavings. It takes about 10 minutes to get a tiny lump, and you would need a lot of lumps to get a full-sized kneaded eraser. You can use an electric eraser for this purpose, though a kneaded eraser will likely do the trick, especially as they can be shaped into a precise form.
